How long has it been since the last season of Project Runway? The move from Bravo to Lifetime caught us off-guard, but I didn’t think it would take about two years to get my next fix. Michael Kors is one of my favorite designers, and his stock has only gone up with the show. Take a look at this video and hear why Michael Kors, Heidi Klum, Tim Gunn and Nina Garcia believe Project Runway became a hit. It will be great to hear the brutally honest critiques from Michael Kors and Nina Garcia again; hopefully they won’t become a kinder and gentler panel because of the network switch. Tim Gunn may have been the biggest beneficiary of this show because he is so likeable, and his rapport with the designers is truly special. I can’t wait to hear the next catch phrase from Tim this season. Project Runway returns on Thursday, lets hope it was worth the wait.
Fragrances have been on my mind this week, and Mariah Carey is launching a new perfume, ‘Forever‘; it’s due in stores in September. The name is fitting for Ms. Carey’s new fragrance, you need only listen to her music to know that she believes in true love and ‘forever’. “I am in a wonderful place right now, surrounded by all the things I love, and ‘Forever’ captures this moment in time” , says Ms. Carey about her new fragrance. We should all be so lucky. Earlier this week I traded in my signature scent for a new one, I would like to think it’s my way of starting anew. You can learn plenty about a woman by the number of fragrances she wears. I tend to keep one signature scent, and remain faithful to that one scent. While I have a friend who has tons of fragrances she wears depending on her mood or her destination. Though I’m already committed, it would be nice to try ‘Forever’ when it comes to stores next month; we know all good things come to those who wait, at least that’s what my mother says.

We’ve named Jil Sander’s Uniqlo +J line to our Rollcall list this week. It is their new affordable line, and it hits stores on October 1st. Admittedly, I haven’t been this excited about a new clothing line in a while. October cannot get here fast enough. I have my eyes on the pleated mini skirts as well as the blazer, they would go great with a pair of tights, cashmere scarf and ankle boots. Am I the only one looking forward to the fall weather? The high-end Jil Sander collection is usually loaded with great knits, cashmeres, and beautiful coats all sleek with clean modern lines. Yes, I am a major fan of the Jil Sander line, and it’s great to see the Uniqlo line so closely in step with the original. Click here to see what we have to look forward to in October. These pieces will practically walk off the racks.
Kenneth Cole has done it again with his fall campaign video. He is infamous for his controversial ads, but this time it is just thoughtful and clever. Take a look at the video and have a smile. Please pay attention because a bit of reading is involved, but that’s where the fun comes in. My favorite lines are :
- ”The times are changing, ([a]nd so are we).”
- “Throw caution to the wind.”
- “Don’t let your baggage hold you back.”
- “Expose yourself to something new.”
- “Find your sole mate.”
When you think about it, those are words we can all live by. Besides who isn’t looking for their sole/soul mate? By the way, I’m loving the accessories and the woman’s black coat featured in the video. My interest has been piqued and I look forward to viewing the collection.
We have another high-end designer collaborating with a mass retailer. Designer Rachel Roy has a new line at Macy’s, and it is a more budget friendly collection to go along with her high-end collection, Rachel Roy. She launched her successful avant-garde collection in 2005. Her new line is a younger look for college students who want to be cool, but polished. Simply put, it’s youthful and sweet. The collaboration also includes accessories and footwear. Here is a preview of a few looks available online now. There is always a silver lining, it’s almost time to go back to school, but you can return in style.
Take a look at this video of everyday women daring to walk in the shoes from the runways of fall 2009. It leaves you with an appreciation of the ‘balancing’ act the models must do for each show during fashion week in front of the cameras and a packed house. These shoes definitely pose a challenge, and that’s saying the least. They range from Manolo Blahnik, Christian Dior, Nina Ricci, John Galliano, Rodarte, and Herve Leger. Of course many of these shoes are for the theatrical effect on the runways, and will never hit the stores for the consumer, or is that wishful thinking? Either way, it was well worth seeing these contraptions, I mean shoes up close. I’m just happy that no one was injured while filming this re-enactment.
Here’s a day we thought we would never see, Harvard University has inked a deal with a designer clothing company to produce a line called ‘Harvard Yard’. The look will be preppy, think khakis, seersucker and plaid. It’s a menswear line, and will feature slacks that will go for $200 and blazers for $500. The economy has impacted us all, and the Ivy League University is no exception. It will be interesting to see the targeted consumer. Will Wall Street get a makeover from Harvard Yard?
Nicole Richie has collaborated with A Pea in the Pod to design a new maternity fashion line. She is the mother of 19 month old Harlow and has her second child on the way, and this gives her insight into what expectant mothers want to wear. Nicole has managed to make motherhood appear chic, glamorous and effortless, and that is some feat. It isn’t easy to balance a career and motherhood, but from all outward appearances, Ms. Richie has found her stride. Click here for a preview of her collection; it will be in stores on Friday. We have selected her maternity line, and the woman/entrepreneur herself for our Rollcall list this week. Ms. Richie may have made an even bigger accomplishment, she’s lulled many of us into thinking we can have it all. The only question now, is when?
We’ve already discussed the need to be budget conscious in this economy, all while remaining stylish. A great way to get high-end items on a budget is to shop online luxury retail sites. These web sites require you to sign up for free membership, and you are then invited to shop the sample sales from high-end designers like Marc Jacobs, Diane Von Furstenberg, Tory Burch and many others. Check out the video. Here is a list of several online retail sites to shop for luxury apparel and accessories at deep discount prices:
The Time Traveler’s Wife is the only movie I’ve wanted to see this summer, but that’s just the romantic in me. Give me a love story with passion and soul-mates, and you can count me in. I love Rachel McAdams from The Notebook and Eric Bana from Troy. The two together bring serious heat to the big screen. It opens on Friday, August 14th and I think I’ll be the first on line for tickets. Bana plays a time traveler who enters and exits the couple’s world involuntarily. The time they do get to spend together is well worth the cost of admission. See you next Friday, I’ll bring the popcorn.
