Finanstyle: The Bible and Your Money

Last week I discussed the impact of limiting beliefs. There are ideas or values we adopted along the way that have out lived their purpose. We get a belief about ourselves and we view our lives through that microscopic perspective.

Today I want to talk about the Bible and your money. If you doubt there is a connection, just keep reading. Even the money we carry in our wallets say, ‘In God We Trust.’

I grew up attending nightly church services on summer vacations. My brother and I often ended the evening snuggled up in the pew next to our grandmother, fast asleep.

In my upbringing, I would hear that  ‘money is the root of all evil.’ Most of us have heard this Biblical verse at some point in our youth. It took many years for me to learn the actual scripture and its true meaning.

1 Timothy 6:10 “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”

This takes on a whole different meaning. It appears that greed is the destructive force, not money. Yet, the limiting belief about money may have already been formed. One may have actually believed that there was nobility in poverty.

The Bible refers to money and finances in verse after verse. Most refer to abundance and prosperity. Any reference to lack was used as a cautionary measure.

There are 7 scriptures dealing with having excess and more than enough to meet your needs:

  1. Proverbs 21:5 “The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, but those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty.”
  2. Philippians 4:19 “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
  3. Proverbs 28:20 “A faithful man will abound with blessings, but he who hastens to be rich will not go unpunished.
  4. Psalm 20:4 “May He give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.”
  5. Malachi 3:10 “‘Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house, and try Me now in this,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘If I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it.”
  6. Proverbs 13:22 “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.”
  7. Proverbs 10: 22 “The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, and He adds no sorrow with it.”
