Chanel’s new Fall 2011 campaign was shot by Karl Lagerfeld, and styled by Carine Roitfeld. The images were captured in a photo booth. Model FrejaBehaErichsen was the subject in these ads, and she brought just enough playfulness and whimsy to make them work. I love that they played with proportions, they added a forest green bolero jacket over a black blazer. The lace look was daring because of the illusion of nudity, but the veil over her face gave it an artistic quality.
How could I resist naming the titans of the fashion industry to the Rollcall list this week? On the one hand we have Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue, on the other hand is Carine Roitfeld, Editor-in-Chief of French Vogue. Both were in the forefront this week, Ms. Wintour had her turn on 60 Minutes, and Ms. Roitfeld with a reporter from the GuardianUK. Though emphasizing any discord between these two women has great entertainment value, we should not lose sight of their tremendous accomplishments. Yes, we must take the high road. Sure there have been rumors that Carine Roitfeld will replace Anna Wintour at American Vogue, but Ms. Roitfeld has dismissed those rumors. The bottom-line is that they are two strong and powerful women with impeccable taste in fashion, and stellar reputations within the industry. It is far more empowering to young women to focus on their achievements. Let’s hope that more young women are learning that you can have a love of the finer things and still kick ass. It is a delicate balance, but these women manage to keep stride in their stilettos. It’s a testament of how hard work, sacrifice and passion can lead to fulfilling careers. Carine Roitfeld spoke with CNN for a documentary about her rise to Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Paris. In Part I of the documentary from CNN Revealed we are made privy to information on her life as a stylist prior to French Vogue. Most of her styling work was done with fashion photographer Mario Testino.
Roitfeld speaks of the love she has for her work, and it shines through the pages of French Vogue. She has been with Vogue Paris for the last seven years, and there is no sign of slowing down.
Several of her influential friends were on hand for this documentary. They not only spoke glowingly about her, but they appear to respect her as a person as well as a professional within the business.
She credits Tom Ford for making her and Testino into international figures. We got a glimpse of the role she played for Tom Ford at Gucci. Ford made her his muse, the most sincere compliment.
The documentary shows a side of Carine Roitfeld that we do not often see. It presented a softer and more affable Carine Roitfeld. We know that one of the premier editors-in-chief of fashion would be passionate about her work, yet there is something refreshing about her level of involvement.
The Business of Fashion has a piece on the Carine Roitfeld documentary. It also alluded to an upcoming documentary on Anna Wintour.
