Amanda Seyfried in LBD at The Red Riding Hood Premiere

Amanda Seyfried wore a sexy little black dress to the London premiere of Little Red Riding Hood.  The minidress was designed by Karen Caldwell with tank-styled sleeves and a front panel in the skirt.  She paired it with black leather peeped-toe heels and a beautiful necklace with vivid colors; even her lipstick was a similar hue to that of her jewelry.  Amanda’s hair was styled in lovely soft waves, her golden locks fully complemented the look .  She brought a classic outfit to life by adding bold lips and accessories.

Kristen Stewart Wears Valentino to Screening in NYC

E! Online

Kristen Stewart was lovely in this black Valentino lace dress at the screening of Welcome to the Rileys in New York City.  The one-shoulder mini dress was paired with a pair of satin high heels.  I love the illusion of transparency when it comes to lace.  It has a beautiful shoulder detail that makes more than a simple little black dress.  The length and the fit makes it youthful.  Stewart’s bold red lips and dark eyes complete the sexy red carpet look.

Three Perfect Little Black Dresses For Spring

3.1 Phillip Lim Spring 2010

Vera Wang Spring 2010

Michael Kors Spring 2010

There is nothing like the perfect little black dress.  It is a must have in every woman’s closet.  Chic and sophistication are two words that comes to mind when you think of this wardrobe staple.  Luckily Michael Kors, Vera Wang and Phillip Lim have updated the LBD for spring 2010.  They’ve managed to keep it chic, while making it more relaxed for the warmer weather.

3.1 Phillip Lim added oragami pleatings in taupe and lavender.  The pleatings create visual interest, and instant sophistication.  Vera Wang inserted a beautiful print at the neckline.  The print elevated it from traditional to modern.  Michael Kors went for a more overtly sexy cut-out at the waist and straps.  It is the most daring of the three, but go ahead, don’t be shy.  There is a LBD for everyone this season.  Each designer had their own interpretation of the little black  dress for spring, and they gave it a little more personality.

Top Five Films with Great Fashion

Fashion Rollcall’s Five Favorite Films with great fashions are:

  • 1. Breakfast at Tiffany’s- Audrey Hepburn
  • 2. Funny Face- Audrey Hepburn
  • 3. The Devil Wears Prada- Meryl Streep & Anne Hathaway
  • 4. To Catch a Thief- Grace Kelly
  • 5. Sex and the City- Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristen Davis & Cynthia Nixon

Each of these films possesses a wardrobe that leaves me weak in the knees.  I love old movies, especially ones with pretty dresses and romance.  That formula always works for me, especially if you throw in a wedding for good measure.  Breakfast at Tiffany’s tops the list because of the ‘little black dress’, it is a staple in every woman’s closet.  Audrey Hepburn is a favorite, and I had to exercise great restraint to keep Sabrina off the list, the mixture of Paris and romance was irresistible.  Above is a look from Vera Wang’s fall 2009 collection, a modern version of the ‘little black dress’. The Devil Wears Prada and Sex and the City made the list not just because the wardrobe was bold and dramatic, but because we must learn to make a place for the new.

Farah Angsana
Farah Angsana

Farah Angsana is the emerging designer in our ‘little black dress’ series.  The final designer in our series is not American; though Los Angeles is one of several places she was raised as a child.

Angsana made her New York Fashion Week Fall 2009 debut at Bryant Park.  Her collection can be viewed at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

A chic strapless black dress is her contribution to this series from her fall 2009 collection.  It is the quintessential cocktail dress, and the ideal one to close out this series.

The little black dress is the staple of a woman’s wardrobe, and Paris Fashion Week was the perfect time to see how this timeless dress has evolved.  It will remain a classic for many, and easy access to sophistication for all.  FashionRollcall.com.

Series: ‘The Little Black Dress’

Paris Fashion Week Fall 2009 is now underway, and there is no better time to highlight the ‘little black dress.’  Coco Chanel made the proverbial little black dress popular for practical reasons, and it took on a life of its own.

In keeping with his strong Parisian ties, Jean Paul Gaultier showcased several little black dresses in his fall 2009 collection.  Please see New York Magazine.

The American cinema also played a significant role in the rise of the little black dress.  Today Fashion Rollcall will begin a three-day series on said dress, but American style.

Three American designers’ interpretation of the little black dress will be showcased.  There is a new, emerging and veteran designer.  Each designer has a different view on the little black dress for fall 2009.
